  • Overview

    The Sr. Content Editor takes a lead role in establishing the daily content development plan. They will often lead the morning editorial meeting and play a vital role in making sure entire newsroom is communicating effectively as story assignments evolve/change throughout the day. The Sr. Content Editor helps focus story ideas and follows up on story leads. Once a daily plan is formulated, Sr. Content Editor will coordinate with news managers on specific story assignments for Multi-Platform Producer/Planners and Reporters and Photographers.

    Responsibilities

    70%     The Sr. Content Editor works with all staff members to compile story possibilities and evaluate calls, emails, and other story leads gathered through social media and online sources for a potential news story. They help to determine the best stories by searching a multitude of sources: newspapers, social media, internet news aggregator sites, beat checks, radio and other non-traditional sources.

     

    The Sr. Content Editor is expected to develop and maintain a list of contacts that can provide stories, confirm information, and help us break news. A working knowledge of what stories we’ve covered and what we can do to move them ahead is critical, as is actively following current events on a local, national and international level.

     

    Must be able to react swiftly and effectively to breaking news and to communicate clearly with producers and managers in house and reporters and photojournalists in the field. Organizational and interpersonal skills are paramount.

     

    10%     It is the job of the Sr. Content Editor to make sure we maintain a comprehensive and accurate futures file to ensure we stay on top of stories and develop new angles to pursue for future stories.

     

    10%     Sr. Content Editor will work with Digital Content Manager or advancing stories online and developing unique content for our digital platforms.

     

    10%     Sr. Content Editor will work with news director and assistant news director on content development plans as well as special projects.

     

    Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree required. Minimum five years working in local news gathering capacity. Candidate must be highly organized, maintain accurate records and the ability to multi-task and work independently. Must have experience working in various computer software programs and newsroom systems.

     

    • Knowledge of broadcast operations and news gathering techniques
    • Strong organizational and communication skills
    • Ability to follow through with all parties on story development and communicate important information to all staff members that need that information.
    • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships internally and with station contacts.
    • Maintain confidentiality regarding company information.
    • Utilize various computer software programs to track and record information.
    • Must be on top of current news, both locally and nationally.
    • Must have a solid working knowledge of key news makers in Metro area.
    • Strong logistical skills are required along with knowledge of Metro roads, buildings, and key points of interest where news is acquired.
    • Knowledge of tools used in creating digital content for social media on our website is required.
