    WTKR/WGNT-TV, a Tribune station in Norfolk, VA, is recruiting for a Sr. Digital Control Technician to work in the Digital Operations Control Center.


    The primary focus of the Senior Digital Control Technician is to ensure that one of the three shifts within the department is optimally managed and effectively performs within the department’s expectations and set goals. The SDCT will report directly to the Operations Manager.  He or she will ensure that all employees on their shift, including themselves is punctual in attendance, trained in all facets of on-air automation, FCC tower light/EAS regulations, and execution of the overall on-air product to the satisfaction of the stations.  Multi-tasking skills are a must.  In addition, the SDCT, along with the staff must be proficient in signal and network monitoring, and must be able to trouble shoot technical difficulties and resolve such matters in a quick decisive manner utilizing various analytical skills. 


    • Oversees the daily functions of a shift within the department
    • Maintains the order and policies of the department throughout the shift.
    • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Ensures all operators on the shift are properly trained in all areas of each work station
    • Schedules employees on workstations in accordance to their proficiencies within the department’s overall schedule requirements
    • Must be flexible regarding work hours for special events, inclement weather conditions and to cover staff shortages in order to support the department’s work needs
    • Writes and reviews the operators’ monthly performance evaluations
    • Must be able to facilitate and perform weekly staff meetings
    • Knowledge of the FCC CALM ACT
    • Operates video servers and automation systems
    • Monitors signal quality
    • Operates the television transmitter via remote control. Maintains modulations levels within FCC regulations.  Notifies the appropriate on-call engineer or personnel immediately regarding any transmitter issues outside of FCC specifications.
    • Performs the duties of the master control operator by switching the on-air signals in accordance with the station log & monitoring level of all on-air signals.
    • Operates switching equipment via remote control
    • Maintains signal quality in accordance with good engineering practices, station policy and FCC regulations
    • Writes time sensitive discrepancy reports and procedural documentation
    • Interprets network schedules and timing information
    • Operates satellite receiver systems including Compusat
    • Must work as a self-starter and both a team player
    • Performs other duties as assigned


    Knowledge of FCC regulations regarding technical standards, and transmitter operations.  Ability to evaluate technical performance by viewing picture monitors, waveform monitors, and meters.  Ability to make decisions and react quickly in order to respond to last minute program changes and equipment malfunctions.  Have a good sense of timing in order to back-time programs and pre-roll broadcast equipment when applicable.  Excellent verbal communication and telephone skills are a must.  Competent computer skills required.  Excellent writing skills are necessary and proper use of the English grammar.   Experience in automation and video server technology a plus.  Ability to multi-task evolving situations at the same time is essential.  Must be detailed oriented, and have the ability to anticipate potential issues, and to successfully resolve the issues before any on-air mishaps occurs. Problem solving ability and quick decisions under high stress at times are required.  Must have the ability to communicate well with co-workers in a team environment, and have a valid state driver’s license, (or be able to get one).


    Education Requirements: 

    High School Diploma, 2-3 years of work experience, with 2 years of supervisory/managerial experience and three years of broadcast television experience preferred.
